Best Temporary Exhibitions I’ve counted 20 temporary exhibitions I visited in 2011, including ones on bathrooms, war photography, movie storyboards, Alice in Wonderland, fire and The Queen, so it’s difficult to choose, but taking into account the overall impact and interest in the subject matter, I think my three favourites are: Mammuts: Giganten der Eiszeit at the Neanderthal Museum The Hokusai Retrospektive at the Martin Gropius Bau Banished Books at the National Library of Scotland Honourable mention to Fashion Talks at the Museum für Kommunikation, which made me laugh because I travelled […]

After visiting all those museums last year, I thought I would do a kind of ‘Museum Awards’ to pick out some of the highlights. Best Food No question, the award for best food experience has to go to the National Library of Scotland, simply for their selection of gluten free cakes! 52 Museums in 52 Weeks

This time last year I had the idea that, as a challenge for the year, I would try to visit 52 museums in 52 weeks. Without further ado, here is Part 2 of the ‘Museums & the Movies’ guide to get you in the mood for tonight’s Oscars, with movies featuring museums in one or more significant scene but not as the main plot premise. As I mentioned in Part 1, I haven’t actually had the chance to see all of these yet, so apologies for any errors. Bringing Up Baby (1938) Location: USA Starring: a museum Rebel Without A Cause (1955) Location: Los Angeles Starring: Griffith Observatory Vertigo (1958) […]

Museums & the Movies – Part 1: Museums in a Leading Role

Do you have a favourite museum movie? Mine, without hesitation, would be the 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, starring Pierce Brosnan as suave playboy billionaire Thomas Crown, who moonlights as an art thief at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen it. Followed closely by Don’t Eat the Pictures, from 1983, which sees the Sesame Street gang descend, once again, on the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Actually, once you start listing movies that feature museums, the […]
