{Netherlands} The Katten Kabinet

It seems that cat museums are a little like buses. First none come along for a while, then two turn up at once. And so it happened, that I recently visited my second cat museum this year! Both museums house private collections, were founded by cat lovers, and have the owners living in the same building on a different floor. But whereas the ‘Kleines Katzenmuseum‘ in Berlin is a centred around a collection of over 1000 porcelain cats, as well as cat collectibles in every other […]

{Netherlands} Say Cheese!

Gouda, Edam, Maasdam, Leerdammer, Limburger…the Dutch are known as for being one of the great cheese making nations of this world, so it’s no surprise to find a Cheese Museum in Amsterdam. Unlike it’s larger cousin, the “Kaasmuseum” in Alkmaar (currently closed for refurbishment until 2014), the Amsterdam Cheese Museum is a small-ish exhibition tucked in to the basement level of a specialist cheese shop on the beautiful Prinsengracht. But if you happen to be in that area, e.g. visiting the nearby Anne Frank House, […]

When you think of Amsterdam and museums, you probably immediately think of the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum, and I will get to writing about those in good time. One of the very first museums I went to visit in Amsterdam, is the Stedelijk Museum located in the city’s Museum Quarter. Founded in the late 19th century, it houses collections of modern and contemporary art and design and is the largest of its kind in the Netherlands. I hope you enjoy some of the impressions from my visit: The museum includes a Family Lab, where families can create some art of their own or pick up one of the three creative family trails to […]

Textiel Museum at Woonbeurs Amsterdam - designs

As I mentioned on Monday, I visited the Woonbeurs interior design trade fair while I was in Amsterdam, and discovered a stall hosted by the TextielMuseum, or more specifically, a mini version of its TextielLab. In its own words, “the TextielMuseum is a working museum. It brings inspiring exhibitions in the field of design and art and offers educational programmes in a former textile factory. The TextielLab of the TextielMuseum is a unique knowledge centre that is both a highly specialised workshop for producing experimental […]

Meet the Blogger - Wall of Business Cards

So, I’m back from Amsterdam and I had the most wonderful time. You know that feeling when you’ve waited years to visit a certain place and then you’re worried it won’t meet your expectations? Well, Amsterdam was everything I imagined it to be. I fell in love with it on the spot. But more on Amsterdam later, let’s start with ‘Meet the Blogger’. ‘Meet the Blogger’ was an event aimed at interior design and lifestyle bloggers, so I knew I would be in the minority […]
