{Scotland} A Mini Museum Marathon in Edinburgh

February 11, 2016

100 Museums Challenge: Museums No.5, 6, 7 & 8 During my recent long weekend away in Scotland, I made up for lost time in my 100 Museums Challenge. After taking it nice and easy in Dundee on the first couple of days, I went on a bit of a ‘Mini Museum Marathon’ in Edinburgh. On Sunday, I visited four museums. It sounds like a lot for one day, but they were all within about ten minutes walking distance of each other, admission to all of them […]

{Scotland} Dundee Contemporary Arts

February 7, 2016

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.4 What better way to start a weekend, then with a museum visit! We started my last day in Dundee with a visit to Dundee Contemporary Arts. As well as a restaurant bar with an excellent gluten free menu and a art house cinema, both of which we had frequented the night before, the DCA boasts two galleries which host a programme of temporary exhibitions. Currently showing is an exhibition by Finnish artist duo IC-98, whose large-scale projections of extraordinary, richly […]

{Scotland} Cake & Art at the McManus

February 6, 2016

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.3 I’m currently enjoying a long weekend in Scotland, leaving my three men to fend for themselves in Berlin. The trip includes a couple of days visiting a friend in Dundee, where we had lunch at The McManus. Their cafe always offer a range of gluten free options, and I couldn’t turn down the chance to try their Bailey’s cheesecake after my soup & sandwich. Heaven on a plate! We followed lunch with some art. The McManus’ current special exhibition ‘Draw […]

{Scotland} Save Edinburgh’s Museum of Fire!

February 3, 2016

A while back, I wrote a rather enthusiastic review about Edinburgh’s Museum of Fire, housed in the historical fire station at Lauriston Place. One of those little discoveries for whom the phrase ‘hidden gem’ seems to have been coined especially. At the time, the future of the museum was uncertain, so I was delighted to see it was still open and going strong, when we visited Edinburgh last Autumn. We had the luck to be in town during doors open weekend, which meant they had pulled […]

{Scotland} Rail Road Disasters, Wild Animals & Silly Moustaches – Exploring the McManus in Dundee

January 25, 2016

Happy Burns Night everyone! Since today is the day we celebrate Scotland’s national bard, I thought it would be appropriate to share another Scottish museum with you. When we visited our friend in Dundee during our family holiday last Autumn, we took the kids to the McManus, Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum. It was also my first time there, or indeed at any museum in Dundee. After a morning of travelling, we started out with lunch in the excellent café – generous size portions and […]

{Scotland} Doon the Watter

January 19, 2016

It seems that when it comes to museums, I am an open book. When we visited my mother-in-law las year, for the first time after she’d moved to Dunoon, she had a leaflet for the town’s one-and-only museum waiting for me on her kitchen table! Castle House Museum is housed in the former holiday home of Lord Provost Ewing of Glasgow, built in the early 19th century on the land around Dunoon’s ruined medieval castle. The museum’s mission is to stimulate interest in the history, lore […]
