100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.40 The Chester Beatty hadn’t been on my radar, for some reason, when planning for Dublin, despite being awarded European Museum of the Year in 2002. But I’m really glad a friend passed on a recommendation, and I managed to squeeze in a short visit before running to catch my bus back to the airport. Chester Beatty library is situated within the grounds of Dublin Castle. The glass roofed entrance hall that links the parts of the 18th century building looks a bit […]

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.39 There are a couple of museums and exhibitions in Dublin dedicated to a single Irish writer, such as the W.B. Yeats exhibition at the National Library, or the James Joyce Centre. But if, like my, you want to get a broad overview of the Irish literary scene, then the Dublin Writers Museum is a good place to start. The museum opened in 1991, and was established to promote both interest interest in Irish literature as a whole, as well as in […]

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.36, 37 & 38 After spending a large part of Day 3 in Dublin visiting the Guinness Storehouse, we took a detour back to our apartment via a couple of art(s) museums. I added another art museum to my list the next day, before heading home. No.36 – Irish Museum of Modern Art The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) is housed in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, the finest 17th century building in Ireland. After restoration in the 1980s by the […]

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.35 When I was asking around what I should see and do when I go to Dublin – it was my first time there – the number one thing everyone said was ‘The Guinness Experience’! By that, they were referring to the Guinness Storehouse, which opened in 2000 as a tourist attraction in a fermentation plant of the St James Gate Brewery. You may ask why I am writing about something which is blatantly marketed as a tourist attraction rather than […]

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.34 If you’re looking for a museum that’s a little different or outright quirky, to visit on your next trip to Dublin, look no further than the National Leprechaun Museum. Yes, you heard right. In the heart of Dublin, this museum, dedicated to Irish mythology, takes you on a journey through Ireland’s fascinating folklore. With leprechauns being probably the best known characters of Irish folklore. At least, you may think you know them. But more on that in a moment. Just […]

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.29, 30, 31, 32 & 33 On my second day in Dublin, I went on a little mini museum marathon. I’d only planned in three museums (yes, *only*, that’s not really that many for me), but picked up another little couple of exhibitions on the way. Walking past a sign saying “free exhibition” to me is like walking past a sign saying “free beer” or “free candy”, lol. Anyway… No.29 – The Book of Kells I’d pre-booked my ticket for the […]
