Kids in Museums Book Club: Digging for Dinosaurs

Kids in Museums

It’s been a while since I blogged about kids museum books. There was just so much going on, I didn’t find the time to prepare new book reviews. But now it’s time to resurrect the Kids in Museums Book Club, and I’m starting off with a book for the very little ones.

I had to try hard not to laugh at his serious face. He’d watched his big brother helping me out with some book review pics for my Instagram feed, and wanted to have a go too. He obviously took his job very seriously!

Earlier this summer, I was really pleased to be invited to join the Parent Panel at Books & Pieces, a small, independent business founded by the lovely Amanda to champion children’s books. As members of the panel, we received a bundle of six free books to review, which Amanda tailored to the kids’ ages and interests of the individual panel members. Knowing about our love for museums, Amanda included this ‘Digging for Dinosaurs’ board book for pre-schoolers in our bundle. As soon as we opened our parcel, the book was immediately claimed by #MuseumBaby as “my dinosaur book!”

The colourful illustrations follow a fossil-finding expedition to uncover a huge dinosaur skeleton, on four two-page spreads, from the initial uncovering of the bones, protecting the fossils with plaster, transporting them to the laboratory to be cleaned, and finally being displayed at “the dinosaur museum”. The scene is in the museum, and includes a fold-out surprise ending.

As well as the simple storyline to read loud, each page includes additional labels in the pictures, from well-known words such as ‘dog’ or ‘digger’, to more specialist words such as ‘chisel’ or ‘microscope’, offering a good opportunity for inquisitive pre-schoolers to expand their vocabulary. And, of course, the museum scene also includes lots of dinosaur names!

In short, this is a wonderful little book for dinosaur and/or museum lovers. I love the fact that the topic has been simplified without been dumbed down. Apparently, as claimed on the back of the book, the core science was written by the author and carefully checked by an expert. #MuseumBaby absolutely loves this book – and when he is feeling generous, he even shares it with his big brother, lol.

I Explore: Digging for Dinosaurs is written by Dr Mike Goldsmith, with illustrations by Kate Daubney. Consultancy by Professor Michael Benton. The book retails at £5.99 but you can get it via the Books & Pieces site at a discounted price of £4 and it is also available as part of the ‘3 for £10’ bundles offered on the site. Even better, if you use the exclusive discount code BearFox10 (which remains actives as long as I’m a member of the Parent Panel) you will receive an additional 10% off your order.

Please note: We received a complementary copy of this book as members of the Books & Pieces Parent Panel, but the opinions expressed in this post are entirely our own!
