Long time readers of this blog will know, that I have a soft spot for quirky museums, so when I heard that there was a museum about a ghost station on Madrid’s metro, I had to check it out!

In fact, the metro station itself is the exhibit. Chamberí station first opened in 1919, and lies between the stations Iglesia and Bilbao on line 1. In the 1960s, due to meet the demands of increased passenger traffic, new and longer trains were commissioned. This meant that the length of all platforms along line 1 had to be extended. However, this was not possible at Chamberí, so in 1966 the station was closed.

In 2008, after two years of restoration works, the station was reopened as a museum. You can go down to one of the platforms, and see up closed the old tiled adverts on the walls, as well as other original features. A transparent wall has been put up along the platform, to stop anyone falling on to the tracks, and as line 1 itself is still active, every few minutes or so a metro train will come hurtling through. Looking across the tracks to the opposite platform, you can see more of the stations original details, as well as old adverts projected on to screens.

Furthermore, what seems to be one of the former stairwells that led down from the street, has been turned in to a small room where you can view a video with footage of the old station in action. Admission to the museum is free, but access is monitored so if the station has reached its capacity you may need to wait to go in until someone comes out. Opening times are usually Thursdays to Sundays, you can check up to date times on the Madrid Metro website.
