Meet a Museum Family #9

Kids in Museums

In the latest edition of the Meet a Museum Family series, in which I interview other museum loving families asking them to share their experiences and tips with my readers, we travel to Spain for the first time. Please welcome Chelin and her family, from Barcelona!

1. Why don’t you start by telling us a bit about yourself and your family?

My name is Chelin and I work for Antenna’s – the museum audio tour and app company. I have 2 children, Clàudia is 10 years old and Ricard 5 years old. We live in Barcelona.

2. How old were your kids when you started taking them to museums, and what was the first museum you remember taking them to?

When travelling, we always take them to museums! My husband and I both work in the museum world so we take them to visit museums or monuments very often. I remember carrying Clàudia when she was 2 at the Parthenon in Athens and she was so interested in looking at the columns.

3. What is your earliest memory of visiting museums yourself as a child?

It is not my earliest one, but I remember visiting the British Museum with my family and friends and seeing my father and his friend reading parts of the Rosetta Stone.

4. Why is it important to you to take your kids to museums?

It’s culture! We need to make museum going into a habit for them.

5. What’s the last museum you visited as a family and how was it?

Our last one was the Correr Museum in Venice. It was a quick visit because we had to take the Gondola soon and the kids were tired.

6. What is your favourite museum to take your kids to?

I like Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, but the kids love any museum with any animal!

7. Can you share a particularly memorable family museum experience

I took Clàudia to la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona when we launched a children tour so that she could test it. She was attentive to all indications on the guide and followed all the instructions. I was very proud. We also went to MNAC (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) in Barcelona to do a fun family activity organised by the museum. We played the role of detectives looking for the murderer…

8. Everyone knows kids love dinosaurs, mummies, and rockets, but is there a museum you enjoyed visiting, that may be a surprising choice for families?

I’d love to visit the Empuries ruins in Girona. They have amazing audioguides for adults and kids that make the visit really unforgettable.

9. What is the best souvenir you/ your family has ever brought back from a museum?

Activity books are the best – they extend the visit.

10. And, finally, do you have any great tips for visiting museums with kids?

Take audioguides for children!

Thank you so much to Chelin for taking the time to answer my questions! I can totally relate to the bit about liking any museum with any animal – one of our favourite ‘games’ to play with #MuseumBoy when we visit an art museum, is seeing how many different animals we can find in the paintings each room.
