{Scotland} Cake & Art at the McManus

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.3

I’m currently enjoying a long weekend in Scotland, leaving my three men to fend for themselves in Berlin. The trip includes a couple of days visiting a friend in Dundee, where we had lunch at The McManus. Their cafe always offer a range of gluten free options, and I couldn’t turn down the chance to try their Bailey’s cheesecake after my soup & sandwich. Heaven on a plate!

We followed lunch with some art. The McManus’ current special exhibition ‘Draw the Line: Old Masters to the Beano’ showcases “a vast and all encompassing range of creativity” around the medium and techniques of drawing. It’s running until Autumn 2016. The adjacent Victoria Gallery, with its curved red walls, in contrast offers a juxtaposition of historic oil paintings. You can read more about the Victoria Gallery and our visit to The McManus with the #MuseumBrothers, in my previous post >> Rail Road Disasters, Wild Animals & Silly Moustaches – Exploring the McManus in Dundee

We finished our visit with a walk around ‘Dundee and the World’, which we hadn’t had time for during my previous visit to Dundee. The exhibits in this gallery are grouped around the themes of Missionary, Mystery, Merchant and Military, looking at the museums’s international collections and how they ended up in Dundee. They include everything from European oil paintings to Egyptian archaeology, and are housed in the stunning Albert Hall with its beautiful stained glass windows.

The McManus is open daily year round, except for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Admission is free and there is free WiFi available in the building. Up to date visitor information, including opening times, can be found on the museum website.
