40 Things About Me

March 19, 2015

Next month, I will be attending the conference ‘The Hive – a gathering of digital storytellers, tastemakers & bloggers’ in Berlin. Yvonne, who runs the conference which is now in its fourth year, has invited all attendees to take part in sharing ’40 Things About Me’. It’s taken me a while to gather mine together – 40 is quite a lot – but here they are. I hope you will indulge me, and perhaps finding out some new things about me :) And, since this is a museum blog, museums of course feature prominently!

  1. My mission in life is to dispel the myth that museums are stuffy and boring or just for an elite. Museums are fun and for everyone!
  2. I was born in Germany, but have spent more than half my life living in Scotland.
  3. 3.5 years ago I moved to Berlin (with my husband and son) without ever having seen it before.
  4. I now have two sons and absolutely love being a mum of boys. I am not the slightest bit disappointed I don’t have any daughters.
  5. I firmly believe in taking your kids to museums from a really young age. Both my boys visited their first museum when they were just a few weeks old.
  6. My elder son (aka #MuseumBoy) had visited 20 different museums in four different countries by the time he was one year old.
  7. My favourite museum in the world is the National Museum of Scotland. I have been in love with it for over 30 years and still count myself lucky I got to work there for a while.
  8. I interviewed for the same job at the National Museum of Scotland three times over 18 months, and got it in the end. Proof that tenacity can pay off!
  9. My younger son (aka #MuseumBaby) was born in just over two hours – we only just made it to the hospital in time!!
  10. I like to plant lettuce and tomatoes on my balcony instead of flowers.
  11. I can live without chocolate and without wine, but not without ice-cream.
  12. My favourite flavour of ice-cream is woodruff (Waldmeister).
  13. The first time I went to do an internship at the Smithsonian Institution in the US, I didn’t really know what it was, but someone else was paying for the trip so I thought it would be a good idea to sign up. The rest, as they say, is history.
  14. My internship supervisor won an Oscar for her documentary short film on the stone carvers of Washington, D.C. Cathedral.
  15. I miss Scotland a lot and would move back there in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose.
  16. Alternatively, I would love to live in Copenhagen – and work at the Post & Tele Museum!
  17. My favourite TV show of all time is Hart to Hart. Did you know one of the episodes is set in a museum?
  18. I have a younger brother and sister. All our names begin with J.
  19. I used to do ballet as a kid, but stopped after a failing an exam for apparently not being graceful enough.
  20. I collect museum souvenirs and was interviewed about it for The Simple Things magazine.
  21. I was commissioned as a lay minister for children and young people in the Scottish Episcopal Church for a couple of years.
  22. My favourite subject at school was Maths.
  23. I have visited almost 200 different museums in seven different countries in the past three years.
  24. I studied Scottish Gaelic for a year at university but can’t remember a single thing.
  25. I met my husband in Japanese night class. I also can’t remember much Japanese, but I gained a husband so the lessons were definitely a good investment :D
  26. I have the Japanese symbol for love tattooed on my shoulder.
  27. I organised our honeymoon around a museum conference I was speaking at. My husband took it in good humour and came to see me speak.
  28. My favourite time of year is Autumn. My least favourite time of year is Summer (I know I am in the minority with this^^).
  29. Nevertheless, I love the smell of summer rain on hot concrete.
  30. I have completed a pilgrimage around the Scottish island of Iona in bare feet.
  31. I can play the saxophone and the ukulele.
  32. I used to be in a folk band with some friends back in Scotland. We only ever played two gigs. One of them was at our wedding.
  33. I sold cheese at our local supermarket’s deli counter during high school to pay for my driving licence.
  34. Turns out I hate driving, and haven’t really driven since.
  35. I would love to do a road trip along Route 66. Someone else would have to do the driving though.
  36. These days, there’s a museum for everything and I love discovering those unique little gems. The most unusual museums I’ve visited include ones on parasites, sausages and broken relationships.
  37. I celebrated my 31st birthday with a visit to the Icelandic Phallological Museum (aka the ‘Penis Museum’).
  38. I don’t care much for shoes or handbags, but I LOVE wellington boots and always own at least one pair. Ideally red ones.
  39. My favourite movie is Mary Poppins. My favourite movie set in a museum is The Thomas Crown Affair (1999).
  40. Bizarrely, one of my most popular blog posts here is about Bread Museums! This led me to claim, in my talk at The Hive two years ago, that museums let you blog about almost any topic. If you would like to challenge me to write a museum blog post about a particular topic, leave a comment below and I’ll do my best ;)

    I love your facts, Jenni… :)
I’m not too much of a Museum person and am not sure if I’ve visited many more than 40 or 50.
However, I love that you moved to Berlin without knowing it, sounds like something I would do.
Oh, and I love the smell of rain on hot concrete, this is summer to me. And I love summer, unlike you… :D
Very much looking forward to meeting you. :)
