Kids in Museums, Germany

‘Das Klingende Museum’ – which translates to as much as ‘The Melodic Museum’ – in Berlin, invites children and families to discover and experience many different types of musical instruments.  Following the motto “Anfassen, Reinblasen und Draufhauen” (touch, blow and hit), visitors can try their hand at anything from pianos, stringed instruments or percussion, to brass and woodwind instruments.

The majority of the museum’s work consists of running workshops for nurseries, schools, families and also general members of the public, all of which require pre-booking. But on the first Saturday of the month, the museum opens its doors for a free-for-all ‘Open House’, which you can just turn up to. And at only 2 Euro per person (or just 1 Euro with a Berlin or Brandenburg ‘Familien Pass’), it’s an absolute bargain.

Posters around the museum explain a little more about how all the different instruments work, or even better, ask one of the many knowledgable hands-on staff (many of them musicians or music educators) to give you a demonstration and point you in the right direction.

Whether you just want to have the opportunity to make lots of noise, want to make some music together with family members or other visitors, or take the opportunity to test out which instruments your kids might be interested in taking up, the Klingende Museum is a great place to spend an afternoon hitting some high notes! There’s no need to be worried about germs by the way, as all wind instruments get disinfected after each use.

The museum’s website is is currently only available in German, but many of the staff spoke English and music itself is of course a universal language. You can find ‘Das Klingende Museum’ on the 1st Saturday of each month from 3pm-6pm at Zingster Straße 15, 13357 Berlin (beware, there are two Zingster Straße in Berlin, so use the postcode if searching for it!), the entrance is round the corner on Bellermannstraße. If you find yourself in Berlin at the beginning of a month and are looking for something a little different to take your kids to, it’s definitely worth checking out!

    Hi Jenni,

I love, love, LOVE your blog. I have a 2 and 3 1/2 year old and we moved to Berlin 18 months ago. Since Hubby works most weekends I’m always on the lookout for activities that are not playground or kinder cafe. I’ve been a couple of paces with my oldest but I am now motivated to take my youngest too. Thanks for the confidence boost! See you at the Hive!
