Museum Marathon Berlin 2014

February 19, 2014

The idea for a Museum Marathon as a sponsored walk was first conceived and brought to fruition by David Mentiply in England last December, when a group of over twenty people walked around London visiting 26 museums to raise over £1,000 for charity (see David’s blog for recaps of the event). Now London has challenged Berlin to the next Museum Marathon, and Berlin has accepted!

I’m organising the event, along with some other Berlin museum buddies, via my project Museum140. The date has been set for Saturday, 26 April. We don’t have the route finalised yet, but it will cover roughly 12-16 miles (20-25 km) and take us past 26 of Berlin’s different museums (26 museums for the 26 miles in a marathon). As with the London event, we’ll be doing this to raise money for a good cause. You know how passionate I am about museums, but something else I’m passionate about is accessibility – which actually concerns museums too. So the cause we have chosen to support is “Tausendundeine Rampe für Deutschland” (1001 Ramps for Germany), a project that aims to provide ramps to shops, cafes and other venues that are inaccessible to wheelchair users, walking frames and prams.

Whether you live in or near Berlin and want to join us on the day for the sponsored walk itself, whether you’re passionate about museums and accessibility, or whether you just want to support me, my project and a good cause through a donation, however big or small, check out for all the details. I thank you in advance, from the bottom of my heart, for your support!
