100

Last year I successfully did a ‘52 Museums in 52 Weeks‘ challenge, even managing a total of 56 different museums. I didn’t have a specific target for this year, but once I was in the habit of keeping a list, I couldn’t stop. This time I was counting the individual visits, and that’s how I know that yesterday was my 100th museum visit of this year!! With a total of 57 different museums I even beat my record from last year, though last year I think I actually made more individual visits – mostly through visiting the National Museum of Scotland over 50 times.

So, here they are: 100 visits at 57 different museums – with 43 of those being museums I’d visited for the first time – in 5 different countries. The visits ranged anywhere from 1o minutes (in between flights at Schiphol airport) to 4 hours (at the Deutsches Filmmuseum), and included having afternoon tea in museum cafes or attending events as well as visiting exhibitions.

For those of you who like statistics as much as I do, here’s a break down of museum visits by countries and cities (for the latter I’ve just included cities with more than one museum visited):

Most Visited Museums:

  1. Jüdisches Museum Berlin (15 visits) – It helps that we live next door ;-) Quite a few of these were hanging out in the museum gardens in the different seasons.
  2. National Museum of Scotland (13 visits) – Despite no longer living in Edinburgh, my most favourite museum in the world still comes a respectable close second!
  3. Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, Museum für Kommunikation Berlin & Berlinische Galerie (4 visits each)

Personal Favourites:

It probably goes without saying that my favourite museum visited in 2012 was the National Museum of Scotland ;-) Other personal favourites from this year include the Museu Olímpic i de l’Esport in Barcelona and the Deutsches Filmmuseum in Frankfurt. My biggest ‘Wow’ moment was probably seeing the ‘Cascade’ sculpture park in Yerevan, and the most memorable in terms of making an impact was the Armenian Genocide Museum.
