Secret Santa 2.0

I love Christmas! There, I’ve said it. But even more than Christmas itself, I love Advent and the whole build up in the time leading up to Christmas. The last three years I was responsible for organising Secret Santa at work (if you’re from a German speaking country you may be more familiar with the term ‘Wichteln’) – well, to be honest, I was also the one who introduced it – even putting in appearances as St Nikolaus and Mrs Clause, much to the amusement of my colleagues.

Since I’m currently not working anywhere (not that I don’t have plenty of work to do with the Museum140 projects and this blog), I also don’t have any colleagues and – disaster! – no one to do Secret Santa with. But this week I discovered a nice idea on a German lifestyle blog, where the readers were invited to sign up to do Secret Santa with each other, you know, connecting the online with the offline, just like museums like to do ;-)

The idea is simple: you send in your name and address*, then you receive a name and address in return and you send that person a little surprise parcel in time for Christmas, either with something you’ve bought or, if you’re feeling creative, something you made, along with a Christmas greeting. You can send just one main thing, or lots of little things, but the total value of your parcel shouldn’t exceed £5/ $5/ €5 (plus postage). If people from different countries sign up, I’ll try to match you up with someone from the same country to keep postage costs to a minimum.

Please be respectful and don’t send anything offensive, and above all, if you sign up, please be committed to sending your Secret Santa parcel so that it arrives in time for Christmas, otherwise you will make at least two people very sad (the person waiting for your parcel and me).

So, if you want to join in the festive fun with other people who love museums and social media, and help me not to have to miss out on my Secret Santa experience this year, send me your name and the address you’d like your surprise parcel to be delivered to at info[at]museum140[dot]com by 10am GMT on 1 December.

* Please keep in mind that someone, as well as myself, will receive your address. I promise to treat all addresses with utter confidence and not use them for anything else other than matching you up with a Secret Santa, though you could of course use your work address if that makes you more comfortable.
