100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.23 I admit, I’m a sucker for maritime museums. So even without it being recommended to us as a great place to visit with kids, Gothenburg’s Sjöfartsmuseet would have been high on my list! Actually, it’s the Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet, to give it its full name, as it includes a small aquarium too. Afore mentioned aquarium can be found on the ground floor. It was smaller than the one at Universeum science centre, which we’d seen a few days before, but it […]

100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.22   Natural history are always a winner with kids, so during our family holiday in Gothenburg we of course had to visit the Naturhistoriska Museum! That and the fact it has a very famous whale exhibit, and we really wanted to ‘meet’ the local celebrity.   The Naturhistoriska Museum has everything you would expect from a natural history museum. Dinosaurs…   …cases crammed full of bugs and butterflies (and don’t those old display cases just look beautiful!)…   …rocks and […]

If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll know that my favourite museum in Berlin is the Natural History Museum (Museum für Naturkunde). Because, dinosaurs. That’s the way I roll. So you can well imagine the amount of hyperventilating that incurred when this invitation fluttered in to my inbox! Yes, that’s right, the Museum für Naturkunde was getting a new T.rex skeleton. And not just any T.rex skeleton, a REAL one. Not just a cast, like in many other museums – there are […]

Last week, I took #MuseumBaby to meet a friend of mine and her little boy at Berlin’s Natural History Museum. I hadn’t really paid much attention to the date, so was delighted to discover that their new special exhibition all about Pandas had just opened! Pandas are very popular, be it as star attractions in zoos, in advertising, or as cute motifs on children’s clothing. But other than that there are sadly very few of these beautiful animals left in the world, and that they […]

Last week I introduced you to the wonderful Botanical Gardens in Berlin, this week I want to introduce you to the other half of the equation – the Botanical Museum. The museum is the only one of its kind in Central Europe, and complements the living plants on display in the gardens next door. The permanent exhibition starts on the first floor, with a look at the evolution of plants – including some fossil botany – before introducing the three big plant kingdoms of algae, […]

{Germany} Things In Jars

As you’ll know by now, if you saw the video interview with me about my favourite museums in Berlin, I’m a big fan of the Museum für Naturkunde (Engl: Natural History Museum). Not only do they have an entire hall full of dinosaurs and uber-sized models of giant insects, they also let the visiting public take a peek inside their wet collections. Comprising around one million zoological objects in 276,000 vials, preserved in 81,880 litres of ethanol, the collections are of immense scientific and cultural […]
