Apologies for the radio silence. There have been some big changes happening at Museum Diary HQ – we moved house, and I was largely offline for two weeks until we got internet sorted in our new place. The exciting news is, we’ve moved back to Edinburgh!! We’ve been busy unpacking boxes and putting up shelves since we arrived, but this past weekend we finally made it to our happy place – the National Museum of Scotland. I swear, #MuseumBoy must be the only kid happy about […]

100 Museums Challenge: Museums No.9, 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14 What’s better than one Mini Museum Marathon? Two Mini Museums Marathons! Well, at least if you are me. I could have spent the last day in of my long ‘girls only’ weekend away in Scotland sitting in a cafe with a nice cup of tea, reading a book, and watching the world go by. Whenever we go on a family holiday back home to Edinburgh, we end up spending a lot of time at the National Museum of Scotland (okay, admittedly, I end up spending a lot of time there too even if I go to Edinburgh on my own). If you do a search for ‘Ice Age’ online, the top result is for a certain series of computer-animated movies starring a sabertooth tiger, a sloth and a giant wooly mammoth. But did you know that not all mammoths lived in snowy climates? And not all of them were mammoth sized either! A fantastic special exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh takes you on a journey to discover more about the origin and evolution of the mammoths of the Ice Age (including […]

{Scotland} Night of the Mammoth

March 10, 2014

As I mentioned last week, I’ve just spent a short break in Scotland, mostly in Edinburgh. Other than haggis hunting in Dunfermline, one of the highlights was the ‘Night of the Mammoth’ at the National Museum of Scotland on the Friday night. It was one in their series of adult only late night events, which usually centre around the theme of the current exhibition – ‘Mammoths of the Ice Age’, in this case. As always, the main hall of the museum was transformed for the […]

The Simple Things

I’m really thrilled to be a contributor to the latest edition of one of my favourite magazines, The Simple Things! As most of you know, writing about Edinburgh from the heart comes easy to me, so getting the chance to share my love for the most beautiful city in the world (a totally objective opinion, of course) in the magazine’s regular series ‘My City’ was a wonderful opportunity. For those of you who are new to The Simple Things, it’s a magazine that “celebrates the […]
