Yesterday was ‘International’ Museum Day in Germany, Austria and Switzerland*. Alas, I was nowhere near a museum, instead spending the afternoon travelling back from a long weekend in rural Saxony. But I did manage to visit a very special little museum while I was there, a couple of days earlier. One of the places we went to see was the town of Bautzen, the historical capital of Obserlausitz (Eng: Upper Lusatia) and an important cultural centre of the Sorbs, a Western Slavic people living in Germany […]

5 Egg-celent Museums to visit at Easter

There’s a museum for everything these days, so it wasn’t that hard to put together a list of Easter related museums. Most of these I haven’t been to yet myself, but some of them are definitely going on my ‘must visit’ list! 1. Located in Sonnenbühl, near Stuttgart, is Germany’s Osterei-Museum (Easter Egg Museum). Opened in 1993, the museum “revolves around the egg content and its importance in the Christian tradition as well as the decorated egg as a cultural object in many cultures worldwide.” […]

More than just a sausage!

“Currywurst is more than just a sausage: it’s one of life’s experiences…” The humble Currywurst is not only Germany’s favourite fast food snack, it’s become a piece of German cultural history, immortalised in literature, music and film. No surprise then, that it should also have its very own museum. I’ve actually visited the Deutsches Currywurst Museum a couple of times, but for some reason never done a proper review of it here on Museum Diary. Well, we were just there again this past weekend, so […]

I suddenly realised I still owed you a couple of posts from my trip to Barcelona earlier in the summer. For anyone with a sweet tooth, Barcelona’s Chocolate Museum sounds like the perfect destination (though as I said to a friend who doesn’t like chocolate, you’re meant to look at the exhibits, not eat them^^) And to keep the exhibits from melting it was also refreshingly cool and a welcome escape from the mid-day heat outside. The museum introduces the history of cacao and chocolate, from […]

Bread Museums

This past week I’ve been experimenting with baking flavoured bread. And you know me, I immediately had to look whether there are any bread museums around the world. I was surprised to discover what a popular topic it seems to be! Germany alone apparently has at least four bread museums, including the Europäisches Brotmuseum (European Bread Museum) in Ebergötzen and the Museum der Brotkultur (Museum of Bread Culture) in Ulm, which claims to be the world’s oldest bread museum. I also found information on bread […]

{Austria} Demel Museum

Have you exceeded your capacity for chocolate over Easter, or do you still have room for more? If so, then here’s a sweet museum that might appeal to you. As soon as I knew we would be stopping off by Vienna for a few days on the way home from our Zagreb trip last September, I started researching what museums I could pay a visit too. I’d already seen a lot of the big and famous ones centred around the Museums Quartier during my previous […]
