100 Museums Challenge: Museum No.2 Yesterday was a ‘doors open day’ at many museums and other public institutions across Berlin. It was the city’s way of saying thank you to its citizens for welcoming in and helping all the refugees that have been arriving here. The day before, I had a long list of museums I fancied checking out, but yesterday morning I thought, ‘you know what, Sunday is family time’, so we all headed out to the Technikmuseum together. It’s #MuseumBoy’s favourite museum in […]

After much begging throughout the week, we headed to the German Museum of Technology on Sunday morning at #MuseumBaby’s request – or the “Auto Museum”,  as likes to call it.  Not that anyone ever has to beg with me to visit a museum, but there were other pressing things to attend to during the week such as, you know, going to work! Anyway, when he says he wants to go to the “Auto Museum”, what he really means is “I want to go and sit […]

So, for some of the cities whose museum landscapes I know quite well, I will be choosing my top 5 favourites, and I also have a couple of guest authors lined up for you. And since an update to my top Berlin recommendations […]

‘seum! Flugzeug!

After visiting the Aquadom and Sealife aquarium in Berlin during the Christmas holidays, I was pointing out to #MuseumBaby that there was a picture of it in one of his story books about Berlin, when he turned the page and exclaimed “‘seum! Flugzeug!”. And indeed, there was also a picture of the Deutsches Technikmuseum with its airplanes. I asked him if he wanted to visit the next day, and he shouted “Ja!!” Who am I to argue with that? On our previous visits to the […]

Doors Open Day at the Transport Depot

September 21, 2012

During the Sundays in September, the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin is having a doors open day to their Transport Depot. September has 5 Sundays this year, so that’s 5 chances to go and see it, which we did last weekend. Housed in a former railway depot, there are over 50 vehicles from the museum’s collection covering 150 years of transport history, including public transport, fire services and refuse collection, and even a couple of steamrollers. Among the collection are plenty of historic trams you can […]
