I have a bit of a soft spot for Maritime Museums, so when I found myself with some extra time in Amsterdam, either side of a conference I attended last week, Het Scheepvartmuseum – which I had never been to before – was top of my list! It’s pretty stunning when you walk in to the glass covered courtyard! From there, three different wings lead off to the exhibitions: the North, East and West wings. I decided to start with the East Wing. On the […]

As far as hidden gems and cabinets of curiosities go, Amsterdam’s Nationaal Brilmuseum (National Spectacle Museum) combines them both incredibly well in one. Founded by Jan Teunissen, from the third generation of a family in the optical business, the museum is located in the heart of Amsterdam and spans 700 years of optical history. Teunissen built up his collection over 35 years of travelling and collecting, and there are even spectacle frames from the last 100 years on sale in the shop on the ground floor. […]

What do you do when you visit a really popular museums that’s so crowded you can’t see many of the highlights properly? (a) be grumpy about it and let it ruin your day, (b) engage in some entertaining people watching. During my trip to Amsterdam last year, I chose (b) when I visited the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum :) You can see more of my ‘People Watching in Museums’ photos over on Tumblr.

This past weekend, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam celebrated it’s one year anniversary of reopening after a major, several year long refurbishment. What better excuse to share my visit to the Rijksmuseum last Autumn with you. It was not only my first visit there, but also my first trip every to Amsterdam, so you can imagine who excited I was! This is the southwest side of the Rijksmuseum, as seen from ‘Museumplein’ (museum square) around which the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum are also […]

{Netherlands} Say it with Flowers

The trees are bare, the skies are grey, the right time to introduce an unseasonal dose of pretty bright flowers, don’t you think? So today I have another museum for you from my travels to Amsterdam earlier this year. There’s nothing more Dutch than tulips. Well, except perhaps for cheese, windmills and wooden clogs, but you get my drift. It may surprise you, then, that before tulips became associated with the Dutch, they caused a craze among the elite of the Ottoman court centuries before. […]
