Kids in Museums

After several art related museum books in a row, this month #MuseumBoy has chosen a book club read for you that features hats! And, yet again, it also features a real life museum: ‘Clara Button and the Magical Hat Day’ takes us to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Clara is a little girl who collects buttons and likes to make hats for her dolls and toy animals, inspired by her late Granny Elsie who was a milliner. She channels Elsie’s creativity by wearing one of her granny’s old hats whenever she is crafting – until her brother Ollie breaks it! To cheer Clara up, her mum lets her choose a special day out and Clara asks for ‘a magical hat day please’. So they set out on a trip to the V&A.

“‘I know…we’ll go to the Victoria and Albert Museum. It’s full of wonderful things, including lots of hats.’ Clara clapped her hands in delight.”

At the museum, Clara embarks on an exciting adventure, when she wanders off to see if she can find a milliner to help her mend Granny Elsie’s hat. Will she succeed? And will her brother Ollie stop grumbling after having to visit a museum? Clara Button and the Magical Hat Day, written by Amy de la Haye, is an absolutely delightful book with beautiful illustrations by Emily Sutton, and sure to appeal to any child who likes a bit of a magical adventure – whether they are enthusiastic about museums like Clara, or a bit more apprehensive like Ollie. Here’s #MuseumBoy’s review of the book:

What did you think of the book?

Good. I like it because I like hats and I like museums.

What was your favourite bit of the book?

Where they go on the bus and you have to find all the hats in the picture.

And what was your favourite part of the book that takes place in the museum?

The hat room!

Do you have a favourite hat?

One that keeps me warm.

How about in the book?

The bird hat! It’s funny.

Was there anything you didn’t like?

It was sad when granny’s hat broke.

After reading Clara Button and the Magical Hat Day, it came as no surprise that #MuseumBoy now wants to go and see the Victoria and Albert Museum. Along with the National Gallery from last month’s book club pick, we’ll have to schedule a trip to London at some point!
