If your read Museum Diary, chances are that you’re at least vaguely interested in museums. Then you might also be interested in this year’s Ask-a-Curator day, which takes place on Wednesday. The event was first created in 2010 by UK based arts marketing agency Sumo, and has made annual return appearances since then by popular demand, with Mar Dixon from Culture Themes taking over the organisation from 2012.

For those of you hearing about it for the first time, Ask-a-Curator is basically a worldwide question and answer session, where interested members of the public can post questions to museum and gallery curators via Twitter. Of course, you can ask museums question via Twitter at any time, but what makes it special is that they’ll be answering in real time and that so many curators are taking part at once. This year, over 500 museums from over 30 different countries have signed up to take part. You can get an overview of all participating museums on Mar’s blog.

If you have a Twitter account (btw, you can find me there under @jennifuchs), you can ask any participating museum a question – just don’t forget to add the hashtag #askacurator. Or you can browse the hashtag to see what others are asking. Since it’s an international event, it will be going on all day. Last year, I was still sitting in bed tweeting along from Germany, when it was late afternoon in the USA and the museums there were still busy answering questions.

If it’s your first Ask-a-Curator and you want to know a bit more about what it’s like, check out my posts about it from previous years:
