Happy New Year!

It’s the first #MuseumMonday of 2012, the perfect day to wish you all a Happy New Year full of of health, happiness and, of course, museums ;-)

But before jumping head first into the new year ahead, I wanted to take the opportunity to reflect back on the year that was. And what an eventful year it has been in museum terms:

  • In March I launched Museum140 as a platform for museum related social media projects, together with @thingsinjars (a.k.a. the husband) who acts as tech support and helps me to brainstorm ideas.
  • In May Museum140 had its first big project, Museum Memories Day, which was a huge success and trended on Twitter in 12 different countries.
  • I also attended MuseumNext in May in Edinburgh, where I got to meet some of my Twitter museum friends for the first time and also make some new ones.
  • After 6 years and 81 days in post, I accepted voluntary redundancy and left my job as Audience Research Officer at National Museums Scotland at the end of June.
  • July saw the re-opening of the new Museum of Scotland and of course I was there for the celebrations, even if I didn’t work there any more – hey, they had an animatronic dinosaur!
  • In July we also launched our Museum140 project Adopt-a-Museum, which aims to put some of the unsung heroes of the museum world into the spotlight. We’re always still looking for new adopters if you’re interested.
  • In August it was time for #MuseumBaby and me to follow @thingsinjars to Berlin, where he had started a new job the month before – LOTS of museums here to explore!
  • We had hardly unpacked all our boxes when it was time for me to jet off to Zagreb for the ICOM-CECA Annual Conference. I sit on the CECA Board as web and social media manager, and we launched our new website and social media presence at the conference.
  • In November we celebrated #MuseumBaby’s first birthday – and counted that he had managed to clock up visits to 20 different museums in 4 different countries in his first year!
  • With Museum140, we marked the fun date of 11/11/11 through the Museum Exposure project, which invited people to help created a photographic time capsule of museum activity around the world on that day.
  • And in December we went a bit Christmas crazy at Museum140 with our Adopt-a-Museum Advent Calendar, Secret Santa 2.0 and our crowdsourced Christmas tree. We also celebrated our 1000th follower for Museum140!

One project or challenge I’d kept rather quiet about, just in case it turned out to be a hug failure, was visiting 52 museums in 52 weeks. But actually, I’m proud to say I achieved it! In fact, depending on how I count it might actually be 54. But more on that in a separate blog post later this week.

So, what’s ahead in 2012? Just as I was writing this blog post, a new hash tag started circulating on Twitter started by @CuratorJournal – #museolutions – asking people to share their museum centred resolutions for the new year. Perhaps I’ll manage to visit another 52 museum in 52 weeks, and there’s definitely lots of exciting things planned for Museum140. But my biggest resolution for 2012 is probably to find a job. With the high density of museums here in Berlin, one would hope that shouldn’t be too difficult. So, if anyone needs a good audience researcher or social media officer, you know where to find me ;-)
