{USA} RIP Squished Penny Museum

March 24, 2011

When I first visited the US in 2001, I was introduced to the craze of squished pennies. I had come across them before in other places, but here there hardly seemed to be a place that didn’t have them. Then I discovered there was also a Squished Penny Museum – of course there was! You could file it under ‘curious museums’, not only for the nature of its collection, but also for the fact that it was run privately by a couple in their living room, visits by appointment only. Which is why I never made it along, since I never got round to picking up the phone. Nor did I get round to it on any of my subsequent visits, but I still kept it on my list of curious museums to visit at some point in the future. Until today, when I was following up some details for a blog post on curious museums for next week and discovered that the Squished Penny Museum closed its physical and virtual doors forever a couple of years ago*. So, the lesson to be learned here is make hay while the sun shines, or rather, visit museums when you discover them!

* Although the site is no longer updated, you can still visit the archived version.
