{Japan} Meguro Parasitological Museum – because nothing says ‘I love you’ like a 30 foot tapeworm

February 14, 2011

When the husband and I first visited Japan together, we asked around for romantic things for couples to do in Tokyo. Suggestions included enjoying the night time view together from the observation deck of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, going for a romantic walk in one of the many beautiful Japanese gardens, and…a visit to the Meguro Parasitological Museum! Yes, this quirky sounding museum is apparently a hot spot for dates – and don’t forget your souvenir photo next to the 30 foot long tapeworm^^

The museum was established as a research facility in 1953, and now holds one of the most distinguished collections of parasite related materials and specimens in the world. The gallery on the lower floor gives a general overview of parasites, while the upper floor gallery focuses on the parasite life cycle. With hundreds of specimens, including tapeworms, mites, lice, cockroaches and mosquitoes, alongside descriptions and images of various symptoms and diseases, there’s plenty to fascinate you (or gross you out, depending how you feel about parasites).

Admission is free, which is always a bonus when taking someone out for a date, though what its romantic attraction is beyond that had us puzzled. The museum’s website asks visitors to “try to think about parasites without a feeling of fear” – so perhaps the hope is that your date will seek refuge in your arms when they tremble at the sight of all those parasites on display?! It definitely makes an interesting alternative to dinner and a movie.

Happy Valentine’s Day!
